Stenciling 101
Check this stencil demonstration by r.s.h. of Jersey Devil Designs. r.s.h. has applied the stencil to a sketchbook and the street side of a skateboard. Spraypaint only in well ventilated areas!

Step One: Find a simple picture that you want to use and turn it into a stark black and white printout/image that you can cut into simple shapes while trying to keep the image readable.
Step Two: Transfer the image to something a bit more durable, stencil paper, i prefer using a file folder or similar cardstock, tape that down to a cutting surface and make it happen.
Step Three: Cut out the parts you want the paint to go through, don't over do it.
Step Four: Find something to spray it on. Paint it all over town!
Step Five: Shake well!
Step Six: Spray softly and quickly over the whole image, repeat if you want a solid look.
Step Seven: For a nice organic feel to the stencil don't over do the spray, leave some parts semi transparent and others opaque.
Step Eight: Let it dry, remove the tape and stencil, keep the dream alive.
Step Nine: Same stencil on a custom skate board.
